Companies Known to Have Great Work Cultures (and Are Hiring Now)
Work culture is a combination of characteristics that make some places great to work, and others not so much, and the following are some companies for you to discover the former
Whenever we take into consideration the aspects that make a company a great place to work, what first often comes to mind for many are an organization’s brand value and how well they compensate their employees.
However, while earning significant salaries, employee benefits, and appraisals with industry-leading companies is indeed ‘the dream’, it is surely not the be all or end all when actually deciding on whether or not to join an organization.
Work culture, or the combination of ideologies in an organization that constitutes whether it is a great place to work or not, is equally, and to an extent sometimes more, important. It is estimated that most of us spend a third of our lives at work, making it imperative that we are able to do so in an encouraging environment that knows how to value its personel.
Unfortunately, some companies still make the mistake of not giving work culture the importance it is due, unknowingly making it more challenging for them to earn their employees’ loyalty, as well making it more difficult to attract talent.
Luckily, there are also organizations who continue to be mindful of the importance of cultivating a great work culture. The following are some companies in the Philippines who continue to do this, and are presently offering opportunities to job seekers who want to experience this and help move their brand, business, and careers forward.
Aboitiz Equity Ventures
Starting out as an abaca and general merchandise business in Leyte in the late 1800’s, the Aboitiz Group, and its holding company Aboitiz Equity Ventures, remains one of the most enduring “family businesses” in the Philippines. It has since diversified its core businesses to power generation, distribution and retail electricity supply, financial services, food manufacturing, real estate, infrastructure, and portfolio investments.
While being family run, the group operates as an equal opportunity employer, where if anyone part of or related to the Aboitiz clan wants to work in the organization, they apply like everyone else, and must be qualified and have competitive credentials. This, coupled with a ‘culture of innovation’ that has led to the continued development of its employees, gives one of the more notable work cultures among big companies in the Philippines. In 2017, it was among the eight companies in the Philippines named in the Forbes Global 2000 list, as well as among those named in the associated World’s Best Employers list.

This year, the firm was ranked No. 7 in the Top 50 Companies for Diversity by international publication DiversityInc. MetroBank
Operating since 1963, Metropolitan Bank and Trust Company is regarded as the second-largest bank in the Philippines. It is among the earliest to establish operations overseas, as it opened its first international branch in Taipei, Taiwan in 1963. While these alone can garner Metrobank the marketability it needs to sustain its brand, the company is also known to have one of the better work cultures among big names in the country.
In June 2019, Metrobank was one of 23 companies named by human resource publication HR Asia in the Philippines leg of its Best Companies to Work For in Asia list. The award was a result of full-time employees in the country being surveyed and measured their engagement based on how well they respond to company culture and management; interact with fellow employees; and viewed their personal motivation in working for the company. MetroBank was also The Best Managed Bank in the Philippines in this year’s Asian Banker Leadership Achievement Awards.
